Namtso Lake 11-day Trekking Tour


Introduction

This trek takes you to the northern Tibet where Tibetan nomadic lifestyle is greatly preserved.

Before your head off into the wilderness of Tibetan highland, you will be taken on a sightseeing tour to Lhasa. Here you learn the history, religion and culture of Tibet. You will also tour around Gyantse and Shigatse, two of the major cities in Tibet.

After exploring Lhasa, we will drive to the monastery of Reting, which lies 180km (112mi) north of Lhasa on a mountain-slope by the Kyichu River and is surrounded by beautiful, old cypress. And then we will drive northward to Namtso, the holy lake of Tibet at the foot of the Nyenchentangla Mountain Range. We will set up camp by the lake. Our trek begins from Duojia Temple. After 4 days trekking through glaciated valleys and mountains of the Nyenchen Thanglha range around the Namtso Lake we will reach Tashi peninsula. There we will visit Tashi Dorje, a cave temple of Nyingma Sect at the southeast of the Tashi peninsula.  During the whole trek you will be surrounded by surreal holy lake and its surrounding spectacular snow-covered mountains. It is truly a place of indescribable beauty.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Lhasa (3650m/12,000ft)
You will be met at Gonggar Airport by your Tibetan guide with a "khata" (a traditional ceremonial white scarf for good luck) and a warm greeting - Tashi Delek. A 1.5-hour drive along the beautiful Lhasa River leads you to Lhasa, lying at an altitude of 3650 meters (12,000ft). It’s advisable to rest and take it easy for the remainder of the day due to Lhasa’s altitude.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Lhasa
After breakfast, You will be guided to tour the famous Potala Palace dominating Lhasa's skyline. You will immerse yourself in an array of intricate Tibetan murals, temples, sculptures and tombs of eight past Dalai Lamas. Potala Palace was first built in the 6th century and rebuilt in the 13th century. After lunch, you will visit the most sacred shrine in Tibet - Jokhang Temple. Surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkhor Street - a maze of narrow cobbled streets with stalls of Tibetan merchandise and souvenirs. Enjoy a Tibetan dinner and a traditional Tibetan dance show (optional).

Day 3: Sightseeing in Lhasa
On this day you will get more acquainted with the mystiques of Lhasa. After breakfast, you will visit  Drepung Monastery where you can observe nuns and monks chanting and performing religious discourses. In the afternoon, you will visit Sera Monastery. You can do the Sera Kora walk for 1 hour and catch the famous debate session of the monks before returning to Lhasa.

Day 4: Lhasa to Reting Monastery
In the morning we will head for Reting Monastery 180 kilometers north to Lhasa. The Reting monastery lies in the midst of an expanse of cypress forest. It was established in 1057 by Drom Toenpa, Atisha’s most important pupil. In the afternoon visit the Reting Monastery or villages down the Kyichu River valley.

Day 5: Reting - Damxung - Lhachen La - Duojia Temple
In the morning drive on rugged road before reaching the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Passing by Damxung town and the 5,150-meter (16,896 ft) Lhachen La Pass we will reach Duojia, which was built in 1716 and is the biggest temple by the Namtso Lake. Namtso, covering an area of 1,920 square kilometers with an altitude of 4,780 meters above sea level, it is the second largest salt-water lake in China next to Qinghai Lake and the highest salt lake. It is said the holy lake and the holy mountain Nyenchentangla are a couple of lovers, who altogether guard the vast pasture and cattle. We will relax by the lake for the rest of the day.

Day 6: Trek Duojia - Buguzhari - Bularanka
Today is the beginning of our 4-day trek around Namtso Lake.

Day 7: Trekking Buguzhari Qiaduonanka Island - Angbakonglong Island
Today we will trek to Qiaduonanka Island and Angbakonglong Island where there are many caves with naturally formed Buddhist images.

Day 8: Trekking Angbakonglong Island - Jiachangcuiguo
Today we will trek from Angbakonglong Island to Jiachangcuiguo. Jiachangcuiguo is regarded as one of the Four Great Bathing Gate of the Holy Namtso Lake. Several giant stones are regarded as the entrance door of the holy mountain.

Day 9: Trekking No.1 Camp - Nam Village - Tashi Peninsula
Contiune on to approach Tashi Peninsula to complete our 4-day trek around the holy lake. Explore the Tashi peninsula by walking around the holy hill, the cliffs of which have eroded over the centuries. Also we’ll visit Tashi Dorje, a cave temple of Nyingma Sect at the southeast of the Tashi peninsula.

Day 10: Namtso - Yanpacheng hot spring - Lhasa
After relaxing and soak up in the beautiful scenery by the lake for one last time, we will drive back to Lhasa with a lot of fond memories. We will stop by Yanpacheng hot spring, the highest hot spring in the world, some 90 km northweset of Lhasa.

Day 11: Lhasa - Gonggar Airport
You will be transferred to Gonggar airport to catch your flight home. Good-bye, Tibet!

Note: You will be accompanied by your tour guide and driver during road trip and by your trekking guide and support staff during the trek.
